Good Product Design
Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) and Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) are products that are sold quickly and at relatively low cost due to their nature as being non-durable, fast-consumable mass market retail products which are generally replaced or fully used up over a short period of days, weeks, or months, and within one year. This contrasts with durable goods or major appliances which are generally replaced over a period of several years.
Due to high consumer demand, short shelf life and because these products deteriorate rapidly, these retail products have high turnover rates which make their product life-cycle and especially economic and social impacts more relevant and important to society than other durable industrial products. In addition, since some of these products are directly consumed by people, health and other issues become of more relevance.
A good product design must therefore be socially responsive; a socially responsible good product results in the least amount of negative impact to society, “before, after and during use”. Good product design is possible by designing the products in a way that they do not have post-usage impacts i.e. they must be re-fillable (re-use of package, decrease of waste), easily disposable (bio-degradable, non-toxic waste), recyclable (re-use of materials) when possible.
Good products, in addition to minimizing social impact after their consumption, must minimize social impact during their production and before their consumption; this is possible through improving the economic efficiency of manufacturing process through design engineering; i.e. by designing the products in a way to use less materials and be more natural resource friendly (reduce). Furthermore, products must save space and be easy and safe to transport, thus the design of packaging and prepackaging becomes equally important.
