There is a line between them and design is at some point of this imaginary line. Sometimes design is nearer art, sometimes nearer engineering and sometimes design is in the middle. As a designer you have to know what is the best position between art and engineering to get the optimal result. The main difference between art and design is that art is free and design is restricted by the user needs. Design should be functional in some way even if its function is to be emotive. The Artist can choose to create for himself, but a Designer must create having in mind that people is going to use his creations.
