DESIGN NAME: Thea
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Theatre Chair
INSPIRATION: Everyday objects like our home furniture create a world with infinite posibilities for the kids imagination. The aim was to design a chair to boost kids' full imagination as well as make adults smile.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This theatre chair's focal point is the back, which can be used as a stage. There is a drawer in the bottom part, which once opened, conceals the backside of the chair and allows some privacy for the 'puppeteer';. Kids will find finger puppets in the drawer to stage shows with their friends.
Silence please, the show is going to begin.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You see a chair but in just one simple movement kids end up with a little theatre where they can develop their imagination and share moments with friends. We are talking about the way children perceive furniture, kids mind transform a chair into something else, something to play with. Thea Chair can coexist with everyday furniture and without complex features this chair gives much more stimulation than common furniture. Thea interacts with us in an emotional way to make us smile no matter how old we are.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We analysed how children interact with furniture. Do you think a table is a hut? Maybe you don't as an adult but you did when you were a child. The point was to make the effort to think as a kid and look at their behaviour. Living whit a kid for a day you realise that they see the world with a different perspective, everything is playing for kids because is their way to learn and socialize. As parents live with children furniture our design had to be formally and emotionally attractive for them.
CHALLENGE: At the beginning there were two challenges. One was to get an easy way to transform the chair into a theatre. The other one was to design the curves of the chair taking in account production issues. Once designed, we came across a new challenge. When you design for kids, the security norm in very restrictive. The design had to be adapted to fit the norm. We worked to make the change without changing the look of the chair.
