DESIGN NAME: Sofia
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Toy
INSPIRATION: Inspiration for the Portable baby crib Sofia design was wooden cart for dolls, produced by the Slovenian traditional craftsmen from Ribnica in the 19th century. We began to wonder what kind of toys would be right for our daughter and what will she play with in the next few years. Then we searched for answers to the questions, what kind of shape would be suitable and how would it blend with the environment. We came up with an organic shape, illustrating the softness of the relationship between a child and a toy baby.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The crib consists of a basic wooden part with wheels. It is basically a curved plywood panel. The body of the crib is elliptical, and cut below, so that it forms four legs, bearing the wheels. An important element of the crib is canopy made of textile, falling over the bed. Canopy is placed on a metal rod, inserted into the wooden part. The crib also comes with a pillow, a blanket and bedding for the soft foam.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The crib has a triple function. It is made for sleeping, for transport and for storing babies, dolls or plush toys. Textile set can be removed from the bed and used separately. Toy is to be used indoors. For three years old and up.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in December 2013 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It finished in September 2015 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The toy is made in accordance with the European Directive on the safety of toys. EN 71 mechanical testing was performed and also the testing for textile adequacy EN 71. We showed the product in different stages of development to various people. The prototype has been tested by children. Prototype was based on the positive feedback and enthusiastic reception of the toy.
CHALLENGE: There are already beds and cribs for playing available on the market, and their manufacture has a long history. It was a special challenge to take centuries old toy, to rethink it, to make it interesting, different and especially simple and elegant.
