Interview with Mr. Gordon W.K. Lam; Ms. Wilma F.L. Yuen at Monday 4th of April 2016

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
WL: Daily flossing habit is highly recommended by dental professionals to prevent the periodontal disease but the tedious technique hinders its popularity.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
WL: To create a tool that provides an incredible easy and effectiveness flossing experience to the users.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
WL: It is only less 10% of population has daily flossing habit in most of countries. We will promote Toothbat to the market. We believe Toothbat is the greatest invention next to toothbrush. Predicatively, Toothbat will bring a revolutionary change on the oral health standard of public.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
WL: I started the conceptual design in 2011.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
WL: The beginning was I looked for a tool to helping my family to develop the flossing habit but unable found a good tool in the market. Therefore, I started to design myself.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
WL: Yes, the products were launched in the market. They are produced ourselves for now.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
WL: To improve the oral health of my family.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
WL: The people who cares about their oral health, adult or kids, men or ladies.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
WL: Toothbat obtains many patent designs. It provides 3-directional floss can reach every tooth easily. And the Twister Technology create the ultimate floss tension that no other product can achieve.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
WL: Toothbat-WOW can give you an incredible easy and effectiveness flossing experience that you never have. It is WOW quality.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
WL: We use 3-D design software and 3-D printing technology on this project.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
WL: Simply and functional.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
WL: The report of public health department in HK tells us that there are only less 10% of population has the daily hand flossing habit. The demand is there.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
WL: Most of people thinks flossing is troublesome, painful and time consuming... The challenges is to change their mind and habit.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
WL: Toothbat is a brand new invention. The design awards can help to bring it to the stage of world.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
WL: From the first generation, it has already had a great improvement in terms of appearance and functional.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
WL: I am so glad that over 90% of my family has developed the daily flossing habit now.
