STATEMENT OF ART:
My practice is centered on 3D printing, and I make it my mission to use this fresh technology to create things that have never existed before. It's my goal to push the limit of what it's possible to make, and to leverage 3D printing to create things that it was simply not possible to produce in the past.

I am currently obsessed with 3D printed lattice forms, in particular their application as lampshades. I have pioneered a radical new type of lampshade using these lattices; they create a mesmerizing, scintillating effect that's utterly unique. Many different visual effects can be produced by modulating the qualities of the lattice, and I have developed my own software for producing these lattices.

As for the wider world, it's sad but I mainly find myself constantly disappointed in the lack of innovation and responsibility displayed by the vast majority of popular/commercial design houses. Walk into any sunglasses store to see what I am talking about; 95% of the frames are nearly identical. The same goes for everything from clothing to cars to most furniture. I believe that the age of digital manufacturing (digifacturing) hasn't come close to reaching full flower, and I hope that when it does we can break the monotony of corporate-drive mass-produced monoculture that we see around us at all times.

As someone with a shining vision of better ways of doing things and more interesting things to look at, it's hard not to feel bitter at the boring and destructive mode that the corporate world of objects is stuck in.

I am also an egalitarian at heart; while it would be financially amenable to design high-end things (and indeed I have no qualms about pushing toward that goal), I also find that my driving force is making things that ‘the 99%’ of people can enjoy. I find things like luxury brands and fashion runways by turns confusing and appalling for this reason. I cannot fathom why anyone would want to own anything with a luxury brand on it, and it’s greatly distressing to me that many people are compelled to do so for no particular reason.

Finally, one cannot talk about design and the built environment in the 21st century without noting the fact that our species is currently hurdling toward oblivion at a shocking pace. Environmental destruction is occurring in no small part due to a vapid consumerist culture fostered by precisely the same set of corporations churning out the same beige-soul’d schlock every season. As an individual, I am very conscious of my consumer habits and try to minimize my footprint to the extent that is possible. However, I am also aware that it is not an individual’s problem to solve; the human race needs system change, and it’s long overdue. Better design can and will be an integral part of this, and I hope that my role as a promulgator of sustainable 3D printing practices can have an impact.
