In the past 5 years she has worked on over 60 productions from theatre sets to costume designs, runway shows to large elaborate events, both regionally and internationally.
Her main aim is to break the mould of traditional theatre, and challenge boundaries by exploring daring concepts. She experiments with different mediums and technologies to explore methods that best evoke emotional connection for the audiences. She believes thats constant curiosity and awareness of your everyday surroundings is the best way to find your identity as a designer and the best way to allow audiences to relate to the work and world you create. As a designer, I like to explore bold & daring concepts, paying attention to shapes & experimenting with different mediums. I strive to pull on the audiences heart & evoke emotional connection, with my main aim to break the mould of traditional theatre. I think that design and art is very subjective and how people react and connect to different works are very much based on their personal upbringing and surroundings. Hence for my designs, it is my interpretations of events in my life, things I have seen and emotions I have experienced. It is my way of telling my story and shedding a light on topics that are important to me, in a way that is visual engrossing for audiences. Recently, I have been invited to do a research program in the Academy of Theatre and digital in Dortmund, Germany and it has really broaden my ideas of evolving from a designer to an artist. Art and design has always been a timeless debate where there are different interpretation and opinion on what exactly do they represent and mean. Usually as a designer, we are given a context and a starting point, which we then convey and communicate through our skills to the audience. As a designer, you serve a context and create a concept for it. You create ways to allow the message to be understood. Whereas art is the other way round. The artist creates context by opinions and concepts that they believe in. Art is not something that we create for innovation sake, it's not something that serves as an ambition to be unique. It is an exploration to not just create something visually pleasing for your eyes but a chance to delve into your mindset and establish the strongest emotional bond between the artist and the audience. But what Im fascinated about with scenography is that you can combine both art and design together. You get to voice out your own opinions through visual context and to create your own interpretation of the narrative to your audiences. It doesn’t just serve as a purpose to create a base for an understanding, but you get to inject your opinion in it and to create conflicts of perspectives. Scenography is art, it is an art that combines with all the other designers/artists in the same production and to stimulate a visual dialogue that you can later bring all together as a stage performance in the same space. Scenography serves as a medium to capture people’s imagination and gives us a chance to create different relationship with time. Agreeing with the words of photographer Alec Soth, when he refers to art and photography as “Find your eyes". I would encourage new Designers to learn everything and anything, as it will open your horizons to new possibilities and potentials. Let your mind run free and be as absurd as you wish. Always staying curious and experimental with different mediums, as that will guide you in defining who you are as a Designer.
