Beyond form and function, his works focus on the sustainability which is not common around designer in China. For example, in Childhood Series, portability and mobility is the idea he intends to address, as he believes furniture should be taken with when move rather than discarded. Furthermore, he also explores how happiness could be enhanced by furniture design. So each object in Childhood Series is designed in a soft and friendly character. As a designer of new generation, I believe design should serve the mass. Instead of designing for the high-end market, I tend to bring functional and narrative products for young working professionals with price within reach. I believe only in this way can design root in people's everyday living and elevate living quality. In China today, many young people choose to live and work in big cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Due to high living cost they have to compromise to a compact living space to balance living budget. This group of people is called "Urban Drifters" - hardworking but have no sense of belonging. As a designer and a "drifter" based in Beijing, I start to question how design can bring happiness? How design can create a sense of belonging? A series of questions lead to my research about "Urban Belonging" which carried out in recent years. To explore the answers, I observe young people's everyday living. I seek inspirations from Beijing Hutongs, museums and art galleries. Finally I found that what can bring happiness is the little detail in our everyday life - from a candle lighting up the rental apartment to a stylish cafe for afternoon read, probably this is what design all about. As a human I believe we all need a certain kind of belonging. At this point I want to design for people like me - those who live in an alien city but don't feel attached. As a designer, I believe this is something I should do.
