About Trinh Diem Uyen : In 1994, I started a fashion business under the trade name Uyen designer at number 9 Trân Phú street, Hội An. In 2000, my designs were featured in several travel magazines. The Lonely Planet referred to me as a “Funky Designer.” That same year, I decided to leave everything behind and go searching to reinvent myself. STATEMENT OF ART:For seven years, I traveled across Asia to find the best colors and techniques for my designs. I found the color of nature in the plants and the beauty of nature in the mountains and its people. In India, I found the natural pigment I was searching for and learned to create vivid, durable colors with hand painting on silk and hand screen painting. I visited Malaysia, Indonesia, and mountainous regions of Vietnam to study with different ethnic minorities. I also worked with established fashion designers from various countries to get more experience. In the end, I combined what I learned about fabrics, colors, and techniques to develop my own natural methods. By 2007, I had perfected my style and was ready to return to my roots to set up my business in the ancient town of Hoi An. The first collection released was the “Black Butterfly.” Then, Papillon Noir was born, in November 2007. Community Every summer, I have organized vocational training programs for disadvantaged young people, many from remote areas in Vietnam. We provided housing and materials for the program. At the end of the six-month course, we selected the most capable students to continue to train as the staff of Papillon Noir. As a creator, I love to study and develop. I also love to do things that are nice for life. I would like to invite all designers around the world to join our workshop. The war left Vietnam in a poor state. But the poorer human beings are, the more they are connected to nature. I’ve got so many beautiful memories of when I was growing up in what was called the “dead city,“ Hoi An. We called it that because the young people left Hoi An for big cities to get jobs. There were only older people and children left in the town, with many houses that were old and crumbled. My childhood game was finding treasures in the things people left behind At this time, even the fragments of glass and scraps of fabric could be traded by people. But these things still inspire me to create today. My childhood home had on open courtyard in the middle, just 25 square meters. This was my paradise as a child. My father loved bonsai and he created a whole natural word in our courtyard. On each side of a pool there was a miniature forest. My father planted many layers of trees, some needing sunlight or shade, and in different combinations of colors. Here was a stage for me and my sisters, and my neighbors for our plays, our games, our theatre. To help us learn and appreciate nature, my father even bought a little monkey and at another time, a small jungle cat. Our family gatherings happened here, in this beautiful courtyard at the heart of our home. I glued many tiny fragments of colored glass to a piece of paper and put it under the sunlight to catch the reflections. By moving the many glass pieces I made a magical stage backdrop. I sent beams of light that illuminated the patterns of the trees, the texture of the mossy wall, the stone forest. And shimmered in the water. The concerts were beginning... My baby dolls became the characters in many stories and sagas. They were made from paper cut outs. Their clothes were made from scraps found in the tailor shops at the Hoi An market. The games are over but they inspired me to be a fashion designer.
