INSPIRATION: In April 2018, Thu Thuy won the Silver ADesign award for the Hanoi ceramic mosaic mirror house. Given the positive reception of this project plus many of her other works of art in the city, Thu Thuy decided to continue to develop public art so it could be appreciated by millions of people each year at the Noi Bai International airport. The large plain walls in the terminal were the ideal location. Given Vietnams long tradition of making ceramic, Thu Thuy decided to create a large scale ceramic mosaic mural depicting the beauty of historical images of the capital city of Hanoi.

Mosaic tiles were affixed with glue and covered with transparent tape. When all tiles were in place, the mosaic mural was cut into pieces and numbered. After being transported to the airport, the mosaic sections were glued to the wall, the surfaces cleaned and additional tiles and color added as necessary.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The ceramic mosaic mural Hanoi Past and Present which measures 3.4m high and 27m wide is located on the wall of the second floor of Terminal 2 at Noi Bai International airport. RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Each year Noi Bai airport welcomes more than 18 million international visitors. This location provides the ideal opportunity to introduce travelers to the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam. Lead designer Nguyen Thu Thuy accepted the challenge to create a ceramic mosaic mural that spans the history of this 1000 year old city depicting ancient and modern architectural landmarks amidst the natural beauty of Hanoi.
CHALLENGE: The selection committee at Noi Bai International airport sets very high standards for approving public works of art. Nguyen Thu Thuy submitted detailed proposals and impressive sketches to persuade NIA to accept her ideas and designs. Having to work during the night was challenging but necessary so travelers would not be inconvenienced. Many artists working simultaneously required refined skills, so the completed mural would reflect unified work of art.
