| DESIGN NAME: Zodiac Horse Ring PRIMARY FUNCTION: Jewelry INSPIRATION: Zodiac Horse Ring was inspired by Alexander Calder. He was a modern American artist who is best known for his innovative mobiles, kinetic and wire sculptures that embrace chance in their aesthetic and his monumental public sculptures. Calder’s wire art is three-dimensional, using the unorthodox medium of wire, which he shaped into remarkably vivid and figure-like objects of considerable character and nuance. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Zodiac Horse Ring is structurally interconnected with a complex wire network of different thickness that provides the ring with a resilient surface tension and overall strength of structure. Desmond created a stylized horse leaving many negative spaces to explore the delicate balanced tension between positive and negative space. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It’s able to produce the complex Zodiac Horse design and more size variations by using the 3D printing method than traditional handmade method. In the current market of 3D printers, the quality and level of detail is high enough. The variation between the physical and digital versions is nearly imperceptible to the human eye. The speed and accessibility of a desktop printer allows us to quickly create prototypes and final wax mold in one to two hours, allowing me to produce personalized jewelry in competitive price. Compared to traditional handmade method, jeweler needs to spend several days to finish a hand carved wax. Another big advantage is that 3D files can be easily edited. A 3D model can be printed as a plastic prototype first to check if the quality and design are correct. Changes can simply be made in the 3D modeling software. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The process begins with concept design. And then convert the design into 3D modeling by using 3D software. A technician edits the digital file into a 3D printable mold, and sends it to a jewelry 3D printer. Once printed, the wax is used to make a high quality mold by outsourcing provider. They cast sterling silver into the mold and give the ring a polish to the highest degree of smoothness black rhodium plating. Cacus Jewelry is a private limited company based in London which primarily operates as a business-to-consumer jewelry retailer, offering a wide range of both its own-designed and customer-designed jewelry from its physical retail location and via various online channels. The company differentiates through using cutting-edge 3D printing technology to create most of its jewelry, allowing for rapid customization and precise, personalized fitting. Personalized and customized products are available upon request. Clients can design the jewelry on their own, and Cacus Jewelry can manufacture the jewelry based on the preferred design and materials such as sterling silver, 14k gold and 18k gold. Customized jewelry can reflect one's personalized meaning, attitudes, desire, dreams, lifestyle and personal story for the loved ones. If the clients are not able to provide a full design of the jewelry, Cacus Jewelry will communicate with them and work out the design according to their preference. Preview of the finished products will be sent to customers for approval and confirmation before manufacturing. Apart from materials, sizes of the jewelry can also be customized according to the wrist size, finger size, etc. The products can always be manufactured according to customers’ preference and their budget. |
