Interview with Kin Wa Chan at Sunday 19th of May 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? KC: The concept of Zodiac Horse Ring was inspired by Alexander Calder. He was a modern American artist who is best known for his innovative mobiles, kinetic and wire sculptures that embrace chance in their aesthetic and his monumental public sculptures. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? KC: Zodiac Horse Ring is structurally interconnected with a complex wire network of different thickness that provides the ring with a resilient surface tension and overall strength of structure. Desmond created a stylized horse leaving many negative spaces to explore the delicate balanced tension between positive and negative space. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? KC: I would like to keep developing it in a collection with different animals. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? KC: This project started in early 2016 and finished on November 2016. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? KC: Zodiac Horse Ring was designed for the Zodiac Morphosis at Loft22 exhibition. Zodiac Morphosis is a tribute to Master Nghiem, graduate of the last class of Vietnam University and recognized as among the four most influential Vietnamese painters of 20th-century whose works had spanned years of war and peace, inspiring generations of artists in Vietnam and art lovers worldwide. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? KC: The Zodiac Horse Ring is being produced by Cacus Jewelry. Consumer can choose material and order online. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? KC: A customers like art and sculpture, who is looking for unique design and personalized jewelry. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? KC: It’s able to produce the complex Zodiac Horse design and more size variations by using the 3D printing method. In the current market of 3D printers, the quality and level of detail is high enough. The speed and accessibility of a desktop printer allows us to quickly create prototypes and final wax mold in one to two hours, allowing me to produce personalized jewelry in competitive price.
