| DESIGN NAME: Arc PRIMARY FUNCTION: Armchair INSPIRATION: Arc Armchair was inspired by the modern architectures and the ponderation of space design on how to composite structures that are not over-decorated and form a new pattern that is elegant and enchanted. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Arc armchair is made out of solid wood with traditional jointer and used triangle structures for its sides which is very steady without sacrificing comfort. Lamination technology was applied for the bending parts. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: - PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in 2015 in Rochester and completed in 2018 in Palo Alto. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Maple, Joint, Laminate bending. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 61mm x Depth 61mm x 77Height TAGS: Furniture, Chair, Wood, Armchair, structure, RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This is an outstanding armchair made out of hardwood with overcome various of structural challenges and woodcrafting techniques. The armchair is comfortable with its own personality, lay back, light in weight and with a pretty structure and appearance. CHALLENGE: The armchair has an unique structural placement which creates challenges when it’s being crafted: it has a wider front side and narrowed when it goes to rare; the strtcure of the 2 sides is not vertical and the 2 frame） has to connect on a curveand frame form a compound angle, so that a welcoming shape by extending the 2 arms could be presented. NAME: HYC Design Studio PROFILE: Hung Yuan Chang earned MFA degree of Furniture Design in RIT and B.Arch degree of Chung Hua University, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning , he also carries a rich guitar playing and instrument crafting experience. He worked in architecture field for several years before he moved to Rochester New York and focused on perfecting his furniture design and wood crafting skills. He then setup his own studio at Bay Area California in 2017. He focus on combining different ideas and crafting skills from different design domains. He believes in being at the front line with his audiences, observing how people live and act is essential to the design. |
