DESIGN NAME: Schweben
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Seat
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the basic geometric shapes, same shapes which we see all around us on daily basis.
At modern interior spaces, seats are no longer "chairs" in a traditional way. They are actually "features" more than just "furniture".
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “Schweben” is a collection of hanged seats, a mix between functionality, simplicity and geometry.
Inspired by the Bauhaus movement basic elements and colors. Schweben Seats are simple representation of the floating/hanging chairs idea. Available in basic colors "red, blue and yellow", white as well. And also available in oak finish.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Nature loves to keep moving, even when it is static, so is the humans; at work, home, or at library.
This seat gives you the ability to move gently and smoothly while sitting by providing the rotational motion, in addition to the swinging.
It gives you the sense of motion.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The first version of those seats "The Circle" with an Oak finish was designed and manufactured in Dubai, UAE in February 2018. Installed in Abu Dhabi, UAE for a Youth Center.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The seat is made of wood mainly. Braced by an inner metal bar to maintain the the shape and for safety as well.
Available in 3 main shapes; square, circle and triangle, and in main colors; blue, red, yellow and white, also could be cladded by oak veneer to give the wooden look.
Hanged by 10 mm metal rope; connecting the inner/hidden metal bar to a metal plate, screwed to the concrete ceiling. The rolling motion has been solved by an embedded bearing ring around the rope to avoid the twisting.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 1100 mm is the main dominant dimension;
for square shape chair it is Width 1100 mm x Height 1100 mm x Depth 400 mm.
Same dimensions apply for the Circle shape, and the triangle as well.
The chair height from floor is adjustable as per the need "600 - 900 mm".

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The main inspiration came from understanding the geometry, the basic shapes and how strong they are creating a composition.
That guides to focus on those shapes separately. To feel the beauty of each one.
Noticing the big potential in lines, combining that with the human scale and functionality.
CHALLENGE: Challenges were creative and structural parts of the idea.
Creatively; how to show the beauty of a shape that we used to see within a composition of many shapes! How to make it more than just a "square" or a "circle".
Structurally; the challenge was how to make it safe, stable, and dynamic at the same time. On the other hand; rolling motion had to be smooth without causing any damage to the metal rope.
Solved creatively with a customized hinge/hanging point connected to the metal rope, embedded within the seat body with a bearing ring.
