INSPIRATION:
Inspired by the Chinese knots, we developed a collection including accessories which make by traditional handmade Chinese knot buttons. The history of knot buttons began in the Zhou Dynasty in China. Handmade knot buttons have become exquisite artworks, and have tremendous aesthetic value. The designer wants to carry the demand of such craftsmanship so that the sheltered workers can make use of their own skills to support their living. Meanwhile inheriting the traditional Chinese techniques.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
By this Chinese knot buttons collection, the designer would like to encourage more people to appreciate the Chinese culture. Knot actually has a double meaning, in Chinese, the character 結 mean integrating, linking, the extension meaning is getting married. For this project, the designer would like to give this work to some local sheltered workshop from Hong Kong, to make these knot buttons which can support for their living.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Looking at research from the Chinese clothing history, from historical book and movie from the library. Then we try to apply a simple method by combining 2000 pair of handmade buttons to make a dress and about 100 pairs of handmade buttons on bag and backpack.

CHALLENGE:
All the knot buttons are handmade. It consumes a lot of time and human power. But the knot buttons head is much bigger than the tail. So, later on, the designer tried to layout the button in a herringbone pattern to avoid this. As a matter of fact, the team collaborate with the local community, workers from sheltered workshop to make the buttons for this project, and later on, they can have their own workers to make the clothing and accessories.

PROFILE:
Designer Polly Ho graduated from School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, going on to study at the University of Central England.
