| DESIGN NAME: Timaeus Fire Pit PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fire Pit INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this project was a model of fire pit as seen in the Game of Thrones TV series, and the graphic symbols used for the elements in The Fifth Element movie to illustrate the concepts enunciated in Plato's dialogue Timaeus. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The fire pit is comprised of two main parts: body structure and the fire bowl, the body is laser cut from a 8 mm thick metal. It has a height of 90 cm and the top part diameter of 55 cm. The body contains 27 pieces designed so that they are easily assembled by jointing without using screws. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It comes assembled ready to be used. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Oradea on august 2016 in and finished in February 2017, total project duration 7 months. FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Materials: - 8mm steel sheet for the frame - Cast iron for the fire bowl - Pla for 3d prrinting the fire bowl mold Fabrication technology: - Laser cutting - Welding - 3d printing - Iron casting - Surface finishing if necessary SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Unpacked size is 550 x 550 x 900 mm TAGS: geometry, fire pit, Timaeus, Plato, cast iron, elements of life, fireplace, medieval, medieval fantasy,platonic solids RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our research pointed that in antiquity the philosopher Plato has associated in his work Timaeus the basic elements of life: earth, water, air, and fire with a class of geometrical shapes. For the base of the fire pit we used the model of the tetrahedron, the shape conected with the fire element in the dialogue of Plato. For the symbols of earth, water and air that appear on the three support elements we were inspired from the images of this symbols as they are represented in The Fifth Element movie. The research was made from internet sources. Finally it is an highly decorative project with a purification and regeneration symbolism. CHALLENGE: The project is conceived such so no part requires bending, its entirely thought for jointing plane parts.
