| DESIGN NAME: Keymotif PRIMARY FUNCTION: Key holder INSPIRATION: In search for a new generation of souvenirs that would bring up hidden aspects of our history, I came up with Keymotif. It is a key holder which is inspired by the motif found on textiles produced by a traditional loom. The motif from a textile, is transformed into a 3D object, which is brought into our everyday lives through a key holder. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The idea that one's absence from home or office could be transformed into a colour footprint by removing a key holder from it's base was very intriguing to me. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: There is a set of 2 key holders and a wall mount unit. With the removal of the key holder from its base, a coloured footprint is created. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2016 in Athens and finished in December 2016 in Athens, and was exhibited in It's all, oh so souvenir to me, Parousies 2017, Athens Greece FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Keymotif is made out of laser cut okoume wood and white plexiglass. Because of the different nature of the materials, there was a lot of fine tuning that took place in order to reach the desired result. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Keymotif base including 2 key holders 110 mm x 110 mm x 30 mm, Package(Stamped cardboard with rubber band) 120 mm x 140 mm x 33 mm TAGS: product design, key holder, decorative items, souvenir RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I was always intrigued by the technical skills of the users of the traditional looms in Greece and the fine and rich results they were able to deliver through a vast number of motifs created on textiles. My idea was to brake down these motifs into simplified forms that they would be able to live through objects of our everyday life. CHALLENGE: The transition from the folklore past to the present situation made me to lean first to wood as a natural material which would be complemented with Plexiglas. Keeping in mind the factor of sturdiness and after several tests with different types of wood, okoume plywood seemed to be the finest solution. On the other hand Plexiglas due its technical abilities of bending seemed quite appropriate. That combined together, led us to the design of a well-balanced product with a profound reference to Greece's recent past. In the early 90s many leading Greek firms turned to product design in an attempt to signal the international competitiveness of their products. Vassilis’ contribution was to offer a top of the line service in industrial design while keeping within an affordable price range. His vision is to design objects and spaces with the notion that they will make our everyday life more functional and fun. In 1994 he founded Mydesign. Together with an extensive network of partners he has provided simple and functional solutions to clients who either manufacture consumer and industrial products or were in need of interior and exhibition design. This approach was taken further to the design of finished products for the mass market. |
