DESIGN NAME: Flourishing
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Shot glass
INSPIRATION: The design arose from the need to express myself to the parents of my Mexican girlfriend, who I was going to visit a month later. After thinking about the culture there, I created 12 sides of a dodecagon inspired by the Mayans. I was flying there soon and was amazed by their genius, how they used astronomy and time in their architectural designs. Even though I never made it on time to give the gift, I figured out a new purpose for it, which was much more universal than I initially thought.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The unique feature of this design comes from its shape that resembles a flower and its ability to flourish when watered and taken care of. When the users are holding the glass, they should feel that it was designed for their hand, as the shape naturally transitions from a smaller to a larger diameter. The height of the glass, which is atypical for a shot also makes it more enjoyable for the user.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The glass is made for a shot of 0.04 L and can be held anywhere along the curvature.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Started March 2016, Ended July 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The first step is to produce the form and the shape of the glass to the exact dimensions and arcs of the glass. The clear crystal version of the glass is used from crystal glass, the coloured ones are made by mixing in metal or oxide concentrates, each achieves the specific colour. The final step is glass-cutting of the glass, which is made by the glasscutter or sharpener. This process gives the glass the final clear, smooth and polished look.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I created the first prototype. The top of the glass from which the user drinks was much thicker. When I gave it to the users to drink from it, they reported some discomfort with that. Also, too little liquid was able to be put into that. I used this information and minimised the thickness making more room for liquid, which has enabled me to solve this issue.
CHALLENGE: I approached a Czech glass cutting company with a drawing and they produced the prototype for me. Twice they didn't make it like I wanted, and also stated that it should be satisfactory the way they made it even though it didn't even have the correct dimensions.
Disappointed by their lack of dedication ending the relationship, I remodelled the glass in a 3D software which paradoxically has given me a new idea to simplify and smoothen the design. Currently, I'm looking for a new manufacturer with whom I will realise this design.
