DESIGN NAME: Ploi
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sculptural Light
INSPIRATION: The inspiration comes from the geometrical elements in a folding technique and its dynamic characteristic, where it can expand, shrink, bend, and stiff. The unity between geometry and shape can be seen everywhere, where everything has a geometrical elements that interconnect within them and to others. The pleats remind of how vast the universe and represent the connection between distance, space, time, and universe with other universe, which can be folded instantly like a wormhole.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Ploi is a functional art that gives accents into the room. The combination between folding techniques and wire gauze produce a sequence of translucent crease lines that composed harmoniously and give more volume to the shape as it expand and shrink. The asymmetrical abstract shape creates variety; it gives different monumental shape that can be seen in each side and produce different dramatic light too.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The shadow gives an illusion of a more dimension to the room so it becomes more dynamic.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in April 2016 and finished in May 2016 in Jakarta. It was exhibited in Casa Indonesia 2016 in The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place in June 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each lampshade is created from a sheet of wire gauze folded manually with care to achieve consistency of pleats. Spray paint is used in coloring and then assembled with bulb fitting and cable.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Lamp shade 330 x 340 x 550 mm, cable length 1500 mm, with 40 watt incandescent bulb.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Trial and error was conducted to understand the characteristic of pleats and the possible shape that can be created. Experiments start from paper creating symmetrical and asymmetrical shape, then applied into other material that can be folded easily like paper, such as plastic, cloth, and wire gauze. From the experiment, wire gauze was the easiest to fold and strong enough compare to other materials. The combination between technique and material gives many possibilities of shape to be explored and function to be created.
CHALLENGE: The challenge is how to achieve consistency in every pleats to create harmonious pleats.
