| DESIGN NAME: CHRONODROP PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smart Watch INSPIRATION: Inspired from a drop of water and the Confucian aphorism “Time flows away like the water in the river”, the message of the design is in highlighting the importance of each small “droplets” of time – when looked individually, each drop of water is insignificant, but when gathered together in a great flow, it becomes a mighty torrent, a power that forges mountains and valleys. From this Confucian analogy, the droplet-inspired design serves to signify the importance of everyday moments. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: CHRONODROP is a simple and beautifully designed smart-watch that has unique waterdrop-shaped minute hand, simple LED hourhand and the two circular LCD screens. The white edge of the watchface is a touch wheel screen, made indent both to signify the difference between the waterdrop and to avoid unintentional touches, a problem in previous smartwatch designs. Also, rotatable waterdrop-shaped strap locks and strap holes are made to look like waterdrops, repeating the design concept of CHRONODROP. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The central droplet minute hand can also be used as interface pointer to point and select the icon displayed on the white edge by adjusting it with the crown on the side of watch and auxiliary buttons. It can also be adapted to smart watch(entire watch face screened) UI. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2014 in South Korea and finished in January 2015/ and got design patent acceptation from Korean Office of patent administration in June 2015. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: ●Touch screen wheel on the white edge of the product that is similar to one in iPod classic ●Modified Quartz movement that can rotate the water drop shaped minute hand ●LCD sceens ●3 Axis accelerometer ●NFC ●GPS navigator ●Aluminum bezel & case ●High quality plastic / silicon band ●Bluetooth technology ●10 ATM water resist ●Chronodrop app supporting both iOS and android SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 46.52mm x 6.87mm x 227.13mm TAGS: smart watch, watch, design, water drop RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A lot of people are not very willing to use smart watch as their daily life device. Because of their unattractive appearance. This product is designed to solve this kind of problem. Therefore, I designed whole new user experience in smart watch to provide the better one, and the watch did not ever exist in whole clockwork history had came out. CHALLENGE: The greatest creative challenge was to depict and combine fashion, function and conceptual value, believing that they could join together in a smart watch. Maintaining simplicity and to show smart factor, analog movement, and even philosophical value in just 4.6cm diameter device was the hardest part. Chrnodrop was created as a watch that consumers would want to wear not only for the smart watch but also as a fashion item.
