DESIGN NAME: Hong Kong Christmas Tree 2015
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bamboo Installation
INSPIRATION: The architect decided to further explore sustainable design in this Christmas tree installation design with the success of previous award winning sustainable pavilion design “Rising Moon”. Considering this installation will only be on display for 8 days, Stanley attempted to use upcycled materials to construct most part of the Christmas tree as to reduce the construction waste. Since most of the Christmas tree in market will be demolished and ending up in landfills after the festival, the design team decided to use Bamboo as the primary material for this Christmas tree to minimise the amount waste.
The “Hong Kong Christmas Tree” featured with Hong Kong's traditional bamboo scaffolding skills, upcycling of aluminium cans into twinkling stars co-created by thousands of secondary school students in Hong Kong. Under music of the festival and vibrant lighting effects, HKFYG and HKIA co-create a peaceful and festive season for all the visitors to make a new-year-wish.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: In partnership with the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups (“HKFYG”), a group of young architects and architectural designer from The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (“HKIA”) Community Development Committee led by Mr. Stanley Siu have design the “Hong Kong Christmas Tree” installation, displayed at the Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront as the tallest Christmas tree in Hong Kong during 2015’s Christmas season.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Hong Kong Christmas Tree has also featured an LED light show that synchronizes with the music. A total of 99 Sets waterproof stage LED spotlights in 7 different levels are directed at the installation, they are controlled by lighting technician through computer programming.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Hong Kong Christmas Tree project began in May 2015, and construction took place between 11th and 18th of December 2015 in Piazza C, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong.
The installation was exhibited in Piazza C, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong from 19th to 26th December 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Bamboo is a popular construction material in Hong Kong with its unique property of high flexibility and durability. At the same time Bamboo Scaffolding is an iconic symbol representing the construction industry of Hong Kong but only limited to its supporting role. The team has reversed the role and let the Bamboo Scaffolding to become the leading role in this installation. The design team also sought a group of students to take part in the production of the 50,000 shining stars out of aluminium cans.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The Hong Kong Christmas Tree is a 23m high bamboo installation, measuring approximately 8.3m (W) x 8.3m (D) x 23m (H).
The entire installation is made from recyclable and reusable materials, including bamboo poles structure and approximately 50,000 aluminium stars recycled from aluminium cans.
The bamboo installation is erected in 3 days with traditional Hong Kong Bamboo Scaffolding technique.
