PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Necklace

INSPIRATION:
I got inspired by Phoenix that is a symbol of the perpetual existence. I used a traditional technique of Kanzashi flower to make fabric flowers for expressing the idea of Phoenix. Kanzashi is traditional Japanese folded flowers made from fabric that are used by women as hair ornaments. By the idea of Phoenix that is a symbol of eternal life, this necklace is expressed Swarovski Crystal's eternal sparkle and the traditional technique handed down to the present day.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Unique feature of this design is that Kanzashi flowers are used as a part of jewelry. I tried to express with the idea of Phoenix that the eternal sparkle of Swarovski Crystal and a traditional technique handed down over 200 years. Many cultures believe that Phoenix is a symbol of eternal life.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
I used traditional Kanzashi flower techniques. While making the piece of jewelry, I did adjust the combination of color to improve the design composition as needed.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started on July 2015 in San Francisco and finished in October 2015 in San Francisco, CA/USA.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
I used a Tsumami technique, a traditional technique to make petals, flowers, and etc. for Kanzashi (hair ornament) used with kimono, for expressing the idea of Phoenix. By the idea of Phoenix that is a symbol of eternal life, this necklace is expressed Swarovski Crystal's eternal sparkle and the traditional technique that has been handed down to the present day.

*Kanzashi flower: approximately 2" x 2" each, fabric, Swarovski Crystal *necklace: Swarovski Crystal, Swarovski Crystal pearl (4mm) *necklace length: 18" *part of tail: Swarovski Crystal, 4 - 7" length *clasp: sterling silver, Swarovski Crystal pearl

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Many cultures believe that Phoenix is a symbol of eternal life. Swarovski Crystal has everlasting brilliance. A traditional technique is handed down to the present day. I tried to express by the idea of Phoenix about the eternal sparkle of Swarovski Crystal and a traditional technique handed down over 200 years.

CHALLENGE:
As the inspiration came to me, I started drawing a design first. I used a traditional Kanzashi flower technique. While making the piece of jewelry, I did adjust the combination of color to improve the design composition as needed.

PROFILE:
An accredited jewelry professional and a designer, Asuka Saito is born in Sapporo, Hokkaido/Japan and based in San Francisco, California/USA since 2005. While gaining experience at Jewelry store in San Francisco, she learned about the jewelry field and obtained qualifications from Gemological Institute of America (G.I.A). She designs unique jewelry inspired by forms and colors found in nature, mostly with natural elements, a blessing from nature, and a symbol of beauty through the ages. She also creates remodeling jewelry for new look and beautiful piece of modern jewelry.
