DESIGN NAME: GROWW.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Greenhouse
INSPIRATION: GROWW. came to life from a simple need to easily grow plants in a small loft apartment. We wanted to make it as accessible as possible so we chose to make it 3D printable & available to download and print yourself. As in a greenhouse you need a transparent glass jar to complete the functionality, we also made it compatible with two most common jars in EU & US - 82mm thread & wide mouth Mason Jar.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: GROWW. is a minimalistic single-plant greenhouse for small flats in overcrowded cities. Core parts of GROWW. are 3D printed with only the jar made of glass. Suits both most common jars in the US & EU: wide mouth Mason Jar and 82mm diameter thread jar. It's designed to be printed with PLA - a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources. The gardening experience is easy to acomplish by adding soil, seeds & water to the inner pot, closing the jar and watching the plant GROWW.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: We made GROWW. verry easy to produce yourself. You just need to have it 3D printed, find an apropriate jar, screw on supported jar cap and you are ready to plant. Put some soil, seeds, add a bit of water in the inner pot, insert the pot to GROWW base, close the jar, and let the nature do the rest. From time to time you can check if the soil is not too dry, or too moist. When the plant is getting too big, you need to replant it to a bigger flower pot and reuse GROWW with a new seed.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: GROWW. was our inner studio excercise to design and market a functional product in less than a week. It was designed in Warsaw, Poland on the last week of July 2015.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Our research on this project could be divided into three steps. First we had to learn about possibilities of making a closed indoor greenhouse. The next step was prototyping our design, choosing the right materials and perfect 3D printing settings. The last step of the research took almost 4 months, when we evaluated our design by growing a beetroot plant form the seed to the leaves touching the base of the jar with watering only once on the begining of the process.
CHALLENGE: Our main focus was to design a small greenhouse, that would be easily accessible to everyone in the world. That's why we chose 3D printing as the production method and popular EU & US jars as the common things most of us usually have at home.
