DESIGN NAME: Labyrinth
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chest of drawers
INSPIRATION: Labyrinth is a chest of drawers. Its contemporary and architectural appearance is enhanced by the intriguing appearance and conception of its drawers. The elegant outline of ArteNemus' creation is underlined by the meandering path of its venner. High quality wood and and outstanding craftsmanship emphasise the high end appearance.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The primary idea in terms of shape was to create a tower shaped vertical chest of drawers whose drawers have a horizontal and vertical dimension. The intricate veneer pattern made from African Ebony and Maple is meant to replicate the labyrinth of streets found in modern cities.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Labyrinth is a chest of drawer meant to be free standing or to be placed in narrower locations. The drawers are designed to contain documents.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in Geneva in Spring 2014 and finished in the same location in October the same year. Labyrinth was awarded a Finalists Award at the London International Creative Competition 2014.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Labyrinth is based on a wood structure covered with African Ebony as well as maple veneer. Given the brittleness of ebony, special attention is given to the application of its hand sawn veneer. The drawers are made from massive Maple. The additional mechanism allowing the vertical part of the drawer to rotate by 60 degrees outwards is made from metal. Labyrinth is currently manufactured in Brianza.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: In the watch industry, complicated watches are sought after by collectors for their aesthetics and mechanical complexity (i.e. split second chronographs) despite their limited practical use.
With Labyrinth, the goal is to transpose the concept of complicated watches into the domain art furniture : an aesthetic exterior appearance combined with an complex mechansim.
Reactions of people (more than 10) who have been shown Labyrinth confirm the validity of the approach. When shown the drawer mechanisms, appreciation further increased.
CHALLENGE: The first challenge was to determine the final outline of the drawers and handles as there are several possible variations to obtain an aesthetic front.
The second challenge was to blend the veneer with the outlines of the drawers to create some additional aesthetic tension. Special attention was given to the veneer on the top of Labyrinth to maintain a connection with the meandering path of the veneer.
