DESIGN NAME: Home Suite Home
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Curated Exhibition Installation
INSPIRATION: The concept borrows elements from hotel boutique properties in industrial metropolitan cities. The structure utilizes as structural material OSB, which is used literally and metaphorically as a material associated with industrial typologies, sustainability and cargo boxes to hint a new approach to luxury and boutique hospitality. Frequent travelers, global trends and the information society provide the new international framework, which has to be conveyed to the visitor of the 3-day event.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a complete boutique suite occupying 32 sq meters, while its upturned mirrored house accommodating the bedroom allows for privacy offering an innovation to the apartment layout. It employs design for 6 senses, referring also to the brain waves that analyze the various stimuli perceived by smell, touch, vision, taste and hearing. The approach of the branded environment through design and architecture, offers a unique tool to convey targeted messages to the customer, redefining the concept of boutique, apartment, hotel, luxury and bespoke.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The basic structure of the installation is modular, making it easy for assembly (5 hours for the whole structure), dismantling and storage in order to be relocated as a temporary exhibition apartment. Among the unique features of the installation are that it offers an innovative layout that accommodates the private bedroom inside a cubical structure, offering privacy allocating the remaining area for various apartment ergonomics and functionality. Materials, colors, textures and finishes are all employed to emit the corporate identity. The concept was named Home Suite Home, using popular associations of home, privacy and coziness and for this reason the module accommodating the bedroom is a house up side down, to hint home associations of the travellers and the new innovative approach. Despite the globalization of the hospitality trends, the context needs always to be localized and for that reason mirrors covered the house module, as a metaphor of reflecting the context and local environment. Setting up the installation as a hypothetical hotel business fully operating, choices also had to be made in terms of designing a complete graphic identity and applying it throughout the concept.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The event took place from 7th to 9th February 2015, in Athens Greece during 100% Hotel Show the premier curated exhibition event for the hospitality industry. It was designed and developed from November 2014 to January 2015.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Oriented strand board panels were treated with pigments and resins to acquire a more lustrous textural and color variety that gives the feeling of leather to a material associated with cargo boxes and industrial typologies. Pine wood beams and pillars were brushed and stained using Farrow & Ball varnishes, to add rustic textures and antiquity while antique copper and bronze metallic finishes enhance the same feeling. Regarding materials and textures, advanced pigmentation, resins and technology were used to alter the nature of OSB and wood, while giving them extra strength and durability. The central module accommodating the bedroom is covered by mirror, acting as a metaphor that reflects the context and locality; while its structure was enabled using laser cut technology.
The warm neutral palette of chocolate brown and butterscotch bring sweet and familiar connotations. Rough custom developed materials like burnt and waxed wood for the bedroom wooden planks, brushed bronze for the metallic lights and vintage Edison bulbs add the essence of unrefined beauty and antiquity.
The technology enabled also the documentation of the construction, which thanks to time lapse cameras was recorded from start to finish. Also the non woven wallpaper material by ARTE, is a product of high end manufacturing technology, giving the 3D effect of classic wood wall paneling with the warmth of caramel almonds. Furniture pieces and decorative items were chosen to match the concept, such as the NUB ARMCHAIR BY ANDREW WORLD or the vintage camera by CARTECO, the MOLO stools made with unbleached kraft paper.
