DESIGN NAME: Minus 13, Desk
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Desk
INSPIRATION: By minimalism - that is integral to my attitude towards life today, where we are subjected to an overdose of information and image. Such an excess causes distraction from investigative and inspirational elements of objects in our everyday lives.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design under review serves an honest purpose that in its simplest for is about providing a surface. The need being for 2 functions is expressed in the division created by one leg or support. To maximise the intent all other legs are removed to focus on a singular element and purpose . The intent and purpose have given rise to the geometry and minimal form of this object.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It does not transform, but actually takes an overall form once being used as a desk and is eventually transformed when the surface is used for various tasks. It is not meant to lose form but remain simple and honest. Its performance is not the forte but its form and its relationship to why this form came about for the user is important.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The desk is part of a journey where I am discovering the joys of using one coherent concept with minimal interference for each object that is produced. The research thus follows the mission to simplify and hopefully satisfy needs that we sometimes only realise after we encounter an object. The research is through creation of various objects and then taking a pause to look back at them as part of a whole and to understand their coherence under the context of a minimal but meaningful intervention into our daily lives.
CHALLENGE: The Challenge is to understand self motivated goals and the response and reaction of others or users when encountering the objects in question. The focus cannot be compromised and sometimes limits of time and budget are constraints. The challenge is also to extract creative solution out of these constraints and turn them into positive elements of design. The hardest part is always to satisfy someone who in particular has demanded a custom object.
