DESIGN NAME: Twins
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Transformable coffee/Lounge chairs
INSPIRATION: Though we´re not expecting twins, my wife´s pregnancy is what gave me the initial idea. The rest was drawing and rendering.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Coffee table/lounge chairs furniture consist of a hollow cofee table, from which two hidden individual lounge chairs can be extracted through the removable lateral doors of the table. During the extraction of the seats, the legs are folded in a closed position so to fit inside the coffee table.
The design is contemporary, sustainable and ideal for unexpected guests who will never imagine the two full seats coming out.
The user can choose to take out either one or both seats, depending on his needs.
When the chairs are out and in use (many users would opt to use this mode in a permanent basis) the table has plenty of room to store from magazines, to book, laptops, etc, etc.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The transformation is as simple as it gets. The table is hollow. At the right and left sides, what seem to be merely the lateral surfaces, are indeed two lids that are extracted in order to remove the inner content of the table: the two chairs. Simple pieces of small hardware keeop the lids adjusted to the main body of the table and are extracted by slightly pressure pulling.
Once the lids are out, the chairs are removed. In order for the chairs to fit inside the table, the legs have to be foldable. Otherwise, the table would have to be much much higher and would totally lose the purpose of a coffe table.
Once the chairs are out, the lids are put back on and the transformation is complete.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The Project started in November 2014 in Montevideo, Uruguay and Finished in December 2014 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
