DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
EVA tea set

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Teapot and teacups

INSPIRATION:
The EVA tea set was created as a tribute to Eva Zeisel, who made some wonderfully sensual and tactile ceramics in her day. "My designs are meant to attract the hand as well as the eye." - Eva Zeisel

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This seductively elegant teapot with matching cups has an impeccable pour and is a true pleasure to partake from. The unusual shape of this tea pot with the spout blending and growing from the body lends itself particularly well to a good pour. The cups are versatile and tactile to nestle in your hands in different ways, since each person has their own approach to holding a cup. Available in glossy white with a silver plated ring or black matte porcelain with a glossy white lid and white rimmed cups. Stainless steel filter fitted inside.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
How to use a tea pot is fairly self explanatory. The EVA has a fitted stainless steel filter insert to contain loose leaf tea while brewing. The shape of the tea pot facilitates a better, no-drip pour in use. The cups are ergonomic and nestle in a variety of ways in different hands. I have observed that everyone has their own preference on how to hold a warm cup and the EVA cups invite a variety of possible ways with or without using the handle.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in early 2013 and a prototype of the white EVA was shown at Maison and Objet in September 2013. The black EVA was introduced in November 2013 and shown at the Disseny Hub in Barcelona during a Craftroom exhibition where it was also featured on television.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Plaster slip-cast molds for porcelain. Porcelain, silver plate (3rd firing)

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
I studied many different tea pots, read articles about pour optimization, made and tested multiple prototypes and sizes. The organic, curved shape of the EVA made it suitable to manufacturing in porcelain, although it is still a tricky piece to make given the propensity porcelain has to deform in glaze firing. Then there was extensive in-home use and testing by key team members and family that led to a series of small manipulations and refinements. Ultimately, each tea pot requires a fair amount of artisan hand finishing to complete.

CHALLENGE:
The hardest aspect was making the stainless steel filter fit with a locking lid at an angle inside the teapot. The other challenge is one that has baffled generations of designers: how to optimize a no-drip pour in a ceramic teapot. In a metal teapot a thin lip can "cut" the edge. In a ceramic, slip-cast teapot, each piece can turn out differently depending on the hand finishing of the spout. The shape and curve of the spout can improve the inner surface "flow" of the tea and influence air pressure inside the spout.
