DESIGN NAME: Puncheart
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Squeeze punch
INSPIRATION: An inspiration for our project was the existing system of donation and the unattractive, unremarkable donation boxes often found in supermarkets and small stores. In fact, most markets have at least one donation box. However, people tend to just pass these by. Based on this, we thought about a method to encourage donation. Prior to developing some solutions to this issue, the problem of present donation systems is that donors don’t know where their donations go to. That is, the donations are quite one-sided in that once a donation is given the donor has no idea of where the money will be distributed or to who it will be given to. In addition, people have to go to a specific place to donate their money; a supermarket or store for example. Through the analysis of these issues, we created the innovative concept of a punching tool which allows the user to make their own personalized donation boxes.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project is focused upon the design of the new concept of a punching tool that is able to make a hole large enough for a coin. This ability gives this project its unique edge and innovative design. With this punching tool, we are able to produce our own coin boxes by ourselves using empty bottles. These can then be used as donation boxes, with the money we save being donated to the third world. It is not only a tool for giving money, but also for sharing our love with one another. After donation, donors can receive feedback via UNICEF, such as photos and letters, from the people who received the money.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: First, users can purchase Puncheart with consideration for which field they want to donate to. There are three types of packages which indicate each donation field (water, education and health). When users want to turn a plastic bottle into a coin bank, they can punch on the bottle’s cap with Puncheart .
Then, there will be a rectangle-shaped-hole on the cap and users can use it as a coin bank.
After users have collected enough coins, not only can they use it as an individual coin bank but also they can donate to their chosen organization. When sending it to those organizations, an enclosed sticker will be used to cover the hole and the other sticker containing the address will be attached on to the coin bank.
<Interaction>
After users donate to a coin bank they have made and collected by themselves, the organizations such as UNICEF or Save the children will give them feedback to describe how the donation they gave has helped third world children, providing a photo or letter from the recipient. This system can provide a more meaningful experience to donators and attract more people to donate and share love with others.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in January 2013 and finished in February 2013 in Korea.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The dimensions of Punch heart are width 90 mm x Depth 55 x Height 145 mm.
When users grip the red handle parts, it transforms into a heart shape.
The handle parts are designed to actuate the punch function which will make a rectangle hole. This hole can then be used as a coin bank. There are three types of package. Each shows a different aid group to give users a chance to select where they want to donate. The package consists of Puncheart, the main product and two stickers; one to enclose the hole and the other for delivering information. The user has a choice of which aid group they would like to donate to (medical, water and education).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Statistically, only 3 out of 10 people have donated to the third world. In order to attract more people to donate, our team has researched the reasons people rarely donate without warm hearts. From this work, three main reasons have emerged. First, people do not know where the donation they give is going and how it can help others. Also, most people tend to regard donations as very special, and only something rich people might do. Finally, it is difficult to find a meaningful experience or value in a one-sided donation, in other words, there is no-feedback donation system. To solve these problems in a current donation system, various channels of donation systems and cycles have been identified. In order to access the problem in detail and give realistic suggestions, we selected Unicef as a target donation system and focused on their financial donations.
CHALLENGE: The most creative part of Puncheart is that it can make people volunteer to donate by making and designing their own coin bank and then depositing their own money. Through those activities, it is possible for donators to find more meaningful experiences and value in their donations, which means providing a more emotional donation experience. It may be easy to throw money into public donation box. However, using Puncheart can convey the meaning of sharing life between the donator and beneficiary in that they donate what they have used and collected for the beneficiary. However, for many people, the third world is hard to imagine. As a result, it is challenging to catch what peoples’ real difficulties in life are and what they need most. That is why we try to attract people to give financial donations. Finally, we revised the design concept toward not just giving money but communicating with each other in a system of donation.
