Editor Frank Scott (FS) from DesignPRWire has interviewed designer S Cube Design Lab (SD) for A' Design Awards and Competition. You can access the full profile of S Cube Design Lab by clicking here. Access more information about the award winning design Puncheart here.

Interview with S Cube Design Lab at Sunday 3rd of March 2013

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
SD: The main principle of our design is “making users own donation box” by using our product, Puncheart, a new concept of punching tool for making coin hole. The idea is people can make their own coin box by themselves with used empty bottles, and donate the saving money to the third world’s people. We got inspiration from user’s behavior that they just pass by donation box, though most of markets have a donation box. To induce people to participate in donation, we created this product.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
SD: We focused on encouraging people to donate more actively by making personalized donation box. Particularly, we wanted everyone involved in donation system (such as donators, organization and third world people) to participate in delightedly and interact each other with warm heart. Through using this product, it is possible for people to experience indeed donation, or it can be used as individual coin box and they can protect environment as re-using empty bottles.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
SD: We expect this design to be produced for real so that everyone can use it and practice donation. In order to do that, we are planning to contact to donation organization such as UNICEF or Save the children and introduce our idea and product. Then, we will find manufacturing company to produce it.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
SD: Designing whole process took one month. It includes research, finding problems, idea generation, choosing final concept, developing concept, modeling and rendering. We can finish design through division of work depending everyone’s specializing part.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
SD: The reason why we designed this concept is encouraging people to make people volunteer to donate by making and designing their own coin bank and then depositing their own money. Through those activities, it is possible for donators to find more meaningful experiences and value in their donations, which means providing a more emotional donation experience.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
SD: This product has not produced yet, but we try to contact Unicef or Save the children to produce it for real.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
SD: There are many donation box around us but those are almost same and have no feature at all. That is why people rarely have interest about donation, we thought. To make people have interest on donation, we thought about personalized donation box by making and design by themselves.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
SD: We referred to products of Fiskars, a global brand bringing tools that empower people in the garden, home, office, and classroom, for understanding of the structure of punch.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
SD: The main user is everyone around us who can be a donator. Through this product, people can make their own donation box and design donation plan like where they will donate and who can they help. Moreover, we designed considering all members in donation system; Donator, donation organization and beneficiary in the third world.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
SD: It may be easy to throw money into public donation box. However, using Puncheart can convey the meaning of sharing life between the donator and beneficiary in that they donate what they have used and collected for the beneficiary.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
SD: The name “Puncheart” is a compound word from two words; punch and heart. “Punch” indicates what it is and what function of this product has. “Heart” means people can share their love with others by using this product and literally, its shape also has heart shape.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
SD: In this project, various design tools were used to produce optimal result. Solidworks and Keyshot were used for modeling and rendering. To revise images and rendering, we used Adobe Photoshop and illustration.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
SD: The most creative part of Puncheart is that it can make people volunteer to donate by making and designing their own coin bank. Through those activities, it is possible for donators to find more meaningful experiences and value in their donations, which means providing a more emotional donation experience.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
SD: Our team consists of two graduate students and four undergraduate students under the guidance of supervisor, Seonhee Jung. All members have all different major such as mechanical engineering, industrial design, engineering design and ergonomics so it contributes to share various ideas each other.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
SD: This product does not need particular technology that requires much money or delicate structure. Rather than, simple mechanical component was applied to actuate the function. Unlike ordinary paper punch, when users grab red handles, it transforms into heart shape which leads to punch a rectangle hole on the bottle’s cap.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
SD: We researched types of donation methods and how many people have donated to others. Statistically, only 3 out of 10 people have donated to the third world and the main donation method was financial aid by regular sponsor or donation box from mart or store. Based on this data, we thought about easy method of donation that can attract people to volunteer to give others.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
SD: It is challenging to catch what peoples’ real difficulties in life are and what they need most. That is why we try to attract people to give financial donations. Finally, we revised the design concept toward not just giving money but communicating with each other in a system of donation.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
SD: We want to introduce our product to as many people as possible to provide them a tool which can make their own donation box. Before producing it for real, we need feedback from authoritative designers and introduce the excellence of our product to the whole world. With this simple product, we want to show it is possible to change the world as well as the system of donation. This is a new try and innovation so we submit our design with pride.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
SD: Rather than just creating a new punching tool making a coin hole on the cap, we design a new donation method or system to provide more meaningful experience and it may create donation culture if many people use it. We learned that it is possible to convey real love and help with a small product.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
SD: Some people think that we just created a heart-shaped punching tool. However, we believe that this product change people’s behavior. Furthermore, changed behavior can stimulate other people to participate in donation more then, they can create new donation culture.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
