DESIGN NAME: Equilibrio
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Sculptural Sink
INSPIRATION: This project's major objective was to explore contrasts. Since stone often has a very dense appearance, I investigated a design and technique to make it appear both weighty and delicate. The sink could have been cut from a single stone block or assembled from a number of small stone fragments. Due to financial considerations, the second option was preferred. A diagonal section and a slight tilt of the upper portion of the piece creates the actual basin.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This sculptural stone sink relies on the contrast between the countertop's delicate inclination and its robust volume. The sink is created by a diagonal section and a slight tilt of the upper portion of the piece. The supports are asymmetrical, with a hollow tube covering the pluming on one side and a skinny leg on the other.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a sculptural object, meant to be, at the same time, artistic and functional. It could be produced in different sizes and the main characteristics are the subtle elements designed in a very heavy-looking piece.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2022 ad finished in August 2022, and is currently being exhibited at Mostra Artefacto Balneario Camboriu, Brazil, from August 2022 until June 2023.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: As already specified above, this piece was assembled from several stone fragments in order to create the curves without the need of a solid block of rock. This was the main technical challenge. The design is actually quite straightforward and is based on a diagonal cut of the countertop, the remaining portion being slightly tilted to the right angle to prevent water from spilling when it collides with the surface.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This sculptural stone sink relies on the contrast between the countertop's delicate inclination and its robust volume. Design-wise there was a search for apparent simplicity: to cut a countertop diagonally and push it down so the water can flow. This tilt is of mere 1cm and in the right angle to prevent water from spilling. The assymetrical supports enhance the perception of contrasts. In one side a hollow tube covers the plumbing, in the other side a skinny metal leg almost defies gravity.
CHALLENGE: The hardest part of this activity was to reach simplicity and yet maintain ingenuity. Assuring the correct funcioning of the sink was also higly important, as it would be in display for one year and should have no problems operating.
