DESIGN NAME: Angelic Blessing
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Earrings
INSPIRATION: 2020-2021 became significant years for all of us to validate the power of love, hope, and prayer due to the worldwide pandemic. These earrings were designed as a piece of talisman jewelry for their owner and its observers by using the angel wing motif which is a loved protector and guardian in the world.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These earrings convey an image of the angelic power of blessing we feel in the world. Angel wings are depicted with the use of Japanese Maki-e on the South sea pearl catches, and the 18K wavy hoops with a Florentine Finish represent the magical angelic energy.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: You can enjoy wearing this design two different ways, either by placing the wavy hoops at the top (the pearl catches can be behind your ears, or on the back (the pearl catches can be on top of your ears).
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: For these earrings, Maki-e was applied on the South sea pearls in Japan, and the 18K wavy hoops with Italian Florentine Finish were made in Italy in 2021. It usually takes about one month for the Maki-e application and drying process. Afterwards, the Maki-e jewelry parts are sent to Italy where it takes another month to be combined with the 18K gold parts.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 18K Yellow Gold, South Sea Pearls with Maki-e created with responsibly sourced Valcambi Swiss Gold Products. Angel wings on pearls are crafted from traditional Japanese lacquer, Maki-e. 18K yellow gold wavy hoop earrings have a hand engraved traditional Italian Florentine Finish. Maki-e is a unique Japanese lacquer technique used for decoration which involves attaching gold, silver, and other colored powders, as well as design patterns using materials made from processed sap sourced from lacquer trees found throughout Asia.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part of crafting these earrings was addressing the different hardnesses among the Maki-e, pearls, and 18K gold. A special coating is always needed to keep the Maki-e on the pearl. The location of the Maki-e application is especially important in the context of Maki-e Pearl Jewelry in case of remodeling or resizing, otherwise, Maki-e and its coating may become damaged and cracked.
