DESIGN NAME: Bridgeside
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Eyeglass Frame
INSPIRATION: Anthropometric data and aesthetic preferences of myopic users into a specific design of the frame.
The color and materials of the frames and temples can be defined by users themselves and delivered to users in a short period of time through 3D printing technology.
The pivot-joint screwless hinge hidden in the front frame reduces the assembly relationship.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This eyeglasses frame is made of titanium alloy and resin through 3D printing. The pivot-joint screwless hinge (patent pending) hidden in the front frame reduces the assembly relationship, which is convenient for users to wear and keep, and makes the product unique and integrated. The outer side of the temples and the front surface of the frame are designed with radial textures, which improves the strength of the frame and makes it have a recognizable aesthetic.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The patented design of the pivot-joint screwless hinge hidden in the front frame reduces the assembly relationship. When the temples are abducted and rotated around the hidden hinge, it will be caused by the 90° bend on the temples, which is easy to wear. When the temples are retracted and rotated around the hidden screwless pivot-joint hinges, the frame can be easily folded. At the same time, the polished titanium alloy and engineering resin surface is resistant to high temperatures, scratches, strong and lightweight, while making the product integrated and unique.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This design put forward new solutions for the design and manufacture of glasses frames under the background of competition of traditional craftsmanship being intensifying in China. So that the client can develop new markets and gain the trust of consumers. In this design, based on the unique metal additive manufacturing process, we explored the design technical route from the customized system to the surface treatment process. Compared with traditional process and design scheme, this design reduces the manufacturing cost, shortens the production process, and makes the brand more recognizable.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Additive manufacturing enlarges the possibility of frame design. After abstracting the frames into multiple design parameters, the customization software can accurately transform the anthropometric data and aesthetic preferences of myopic users into a specific design of the frame. The color and materials of the frames and temples can be defined by users themselves and delivered to users in a short period of time through 3D printing technology.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The combination of DLP 3D printing technology and metal 3D printing applied to the design of customized frames solves current problems, like uncomfortable wearing and worse myopia due to traditional mass-manufactured frames that do not fit well with the users’ heads. The frame is made through DLP3D printing with high precision and easy maintenance. In contrast, the temples are manufactured by metal 3D printing. By doing so, it avoids the difficulty of using metal 3D printing in producing complicated and small pieces; meanwhile, it retains the characteristics of individual customization.
CHALLENGE: Our design needs to put forward new solutions for the design and manufacture of glasses frames under the background of competition of traditional craftsmanship being intensifying in China. So that the client can develop new markets and gain the trust of consumers. While the additive manufacturing technology has already had its application in the glasses frame industry, it seems that there are very few applications of titanium alloy metal 3D printing.
