| DESIGN NAME: Pike PRIMARY FUNCTION: Toy INSPIRATION: Toys. Making toys. Love of wood. Giving a soul to a natural material. A passion for problem solving of mechanical systems and Innovative design intention. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Pike is an articulated wooden doll. Thanks to tension power created by the ball-ended elastic cords, it stills in the position you give. It has an athletic body look. Disassembly and assembly is part of the game. It does not require any tool. Elastic cords can pass through the joints and strapped around them to assemble the legs and arms easily. This is the unique feature of this design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Pike comes up in assembled form out of its box. It is ready to play. Its arms, legs and head can take almost any posture that humans can do. You can play with it by giving action poses. Giving the best natural poses can be a challenging game with your friends. You may choose to disassemble it. It has 18 wooden parts and 26 in total with the elastic cords. So reassembling can be a funny game on its own. Touching and playing with an unpainted, raw wood gives a relaxing effect. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Pike is made of finger jointed natural beech blocks. All parts are manufactured by CNC milling technology. The parts do not have any paint, glue or fastening elements such as screws. The tiny balls, at the end of the elastic cords, are made of recycled sawdust that comes from the milling operation. A mixture of clear epoxy resin is molded with the elastic cords. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Pike is 70 mm(W) x 40 mm(D) x 245 mm(H) in dimension. The packaging is corrugated cardboard with the dimension of 120 x 60 x 280 mm. TAGS: Wooden toy, Designer toys, Articulated doll, Stop motion doll, Mannequin, Poser, Character design, CNC milling RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Comparative research has been done to identify similarities and differences between similar groups of toys such as puppets, mannequins and articulated dolls. Finding the potential market and defining the age range were the main objectives. One-to-one interviews have been done to focus groups. Lots of data collected over the internet from subject related magazines, open platforms, and selling channels. Main concentration points, weaknesses and potentials have been defined by conducting experiments with a close environment over prototypes to form essential insights. CHALLENGE: The most challenging design activity for this project was solving wooden joint mechanisms and an assembly system which needs to be tough, producible, moveable, easy to assemble, be operated with an elastic cord and esthetically well designed at the same time.
