DESIGN NAME: Pastoco
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Pie Chart Plate
INSPIRATION: Most of fresh couples wish spending healthy and happy life together, but they have difficulty to practice it, especially in what they eat. Because too-managed food restricts their normal life, and they need to pay attention to calories all the time. As a result of these restrictions, they lost pleasure of eating foods. For their targets to keep the healthy diet positively, they try to solve the above problems with design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This plate visualize the balance of nutrition in foods with its pie chart shape. Fresh couples can grasp how well-balanced their foods are intuitively, without weighing foods or calculating the amount of nutrition. Moreover, the open part shows the target the start of eating way, eating vegetables first. It prevents sharp increase of blood sugar level. Fresh couples can practice positive diet with well-balanced and healthy foods on this plate.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: All they need to do is very simple. They should just place foods and dishes on the plate. Here is the colorful pie chart of foods. It shows what food is sufficient and is not sufficient. Now, they wonder how much the ratio of each foods are. If there is a colorful food pie chart in front of them, today’s meal will be ideal.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Our design work started in March 2020 between London and Osaka, will finish in September 2020 in Osaka in Japan.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: They make this plate with ceramic. And the surface finishing is fine matte texture. Its natural and warm texture makes foods look better. It will motivate them to keep healthy diet. And also, ceramic has good mass-productivity. It is not so expensive and stylish plate.
Fresh couples eat foods with this plate every day. Therefore, they did not select just easy to handle cheap plastic, hard to use stylish wood, but selected ceramic.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The whole size of this plate is D220mm x W220mm x H20mm, the diameter of center hole is 70mm. Thanks to its compact size and center hole, if our target fills the plate with foods, the total amount of foods is not so much. And less blank spaces give them an illusion as if they eat a lot. Therefore, they eat less, and are satisfied with it.
The plate also has four colors, natural beige, white, navy and paste pink. Our target can select their favorite color from the variations.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: They observed the tastes and behaviors of the target. And they did interviews to them too. As the result, they found their general problems that the target tends to eat unhealthily and get fat after the marriage. Because the fulfilled life with partner enhances the appetite. And one can’t resist eating as much as the other.
Fortunately, a wife has somewhat sense of health more than her husband generally. So she has encouraged him and herself to try losing weight for some times since their marriage. But the strict management can throw cold water on their newly-married life, and get difficulty to keep on it.
CHALLENGE: The big challenge was balancing two conflictive factors. For the fresh couples to succeed losing weight with their plate, 1. they can control their foods without conscious restriction, 2. they can enjoy eating as well. Because most of fresh couples are not keen on keeping healthy diet to sacrifice eating happily.
If the plate is separated into small sections for each food, it looks as if the plate forces the target to eating healthy. If the plate has just organic and aesthetic design, it does not have a healthcare function. Through try and error, the team got inspiration from pie chart which is the symbol of visualization of balance, and got over the challenge.
