DESIGN DETAILS |
DESIGN NAME: Hungarosauna
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Floating Spa
INSPIRATION: The concept is based on opening a perpendicular axis with the aim of incorporating a less used stretch of coastline in the tourist circulation. The proposed landscaping solution, with its lakeside promenade accompanied by piers and planter boxes of aquatic plants, can meet this goal, especially in summer; but if completed with a sauna building, it can attract people throughout the year.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The planned building is the physical closure of the linear grove, cassette, pruning, and bar. The entire area of the building delimits the beach area from the open lakeside section, the main function of the building, and the sauna is already above the water. The sauna building is accessible from the spa area and from the park and welcomes guests throughout the year.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Most of the trees lie in the lane between the fence and the lakeside promenade, forming a grove area. The lush strip provides natural protection towards the lake and provides shade and contributes to biodiversity conservation. The lakeside promenade runs through this reed, and from this corridor that is closed from the lake, three protrusions penetrate the water of the lake, letting playfulness break the monotony of the crowd, offer rest and contemplation, while also giving the opportunity to choose between sunbathing and shadow.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: 2019-2020, Hajduszoboszlo, Hungary
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Architecture, Building and Structure Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The building has a wooden pillar-frame structure with cross-laminated lintel. The use of renewable energy (solar panels on rooftops) and the environmentally conscious use of materials (wood from sustainable forest management) minimize the ecological footprint of the building. The statue-like building, covered with wood inside and out in a homogeneous way, seems like a tree trunk.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Land area: 2600 m2 Total net building area: 350 m2 Exterior space, cladding, landscaping: 2250 m2 Installation percentage to design area: 13.5% Covered surfaces: 750 m2 (33%) Wood Surface Areas: 440 m2 (60%) Size of paved surfaces: 310 m2 (40%) Green surfaces: 1500 m2 (66%) Woodland area: 950 m2 (65%) Area of cassette areas: 550 m2 (35%) Facade height: 5.9 m

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: An important aspect of the investment is scheduling, sustainability and expandability. Adapting to unexpected economic situations. This is also true of landscape architecture and architectural elements. On the shore and partly in the water-filled sauna building, and the swimming pool with a water bath attached to it, a new function group can be used throughout the year for the sun. At the same time, the sauna building is functional without the float. In this case, there would be an outdoor dive at the end of the building.
CHALLENGE: Scheduling, sustainability and expandability are all important aspects of the investment, just like the adaptation to unexpected economic situations. This is also true for landscape architecture and architectural elements. The sauna building standing on the lakeside and partly in the water, together with the attached floating pool of healing water and the sunbathing hill introduce a year-round new feature-group to the area. At the same time, the sauna building is operational even without the floating platform. In this case, an outdoor cold plunge tub will be placed at the end of the building.

PROFILE: Helsinki based Architect, Interior Designer and Photographer. He graduated from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics - Faculty of Architecture with a Master of Science in Architecture. His projects have explored how to minimize the negative environmental impact of buildings by efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy, and the ecosystem at large. He believes that „nowadays, it is not enough only to preserve our environment as it is, we have to make effort to actively enrich it. In all my works, I emphasise the importance of a combined architectural and landscape design concept. In this, it is crucial to consider the use of renewable materials, the solutions of sustainable maintenance, and doing so, minimizing the ecological footprint, and respect the biodiversity.” This is a sentiment that he incorporates into all his design work, with a strong focus on timber structures and small design details: „I strongly believe that good architecture is capable of addressing a great amount of social issues including those associated with climate change.”
