DESIGN NAME: Ska V29
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dining Table
INSPIRATION: Like so many inhabitants of the Dolomites, the passage of the storm Vaia hit me very emotionally, I will always remember that night, For many hours I felt the fury of the storm that slapped our mountains, only in the morning with the first light of dawn could I observe the damage caused by its passage. The first images of the woods behind the house were etched in my memory and after a few days I began to sketch this tangle of felled trees on paper.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The aesthetics of the Ska table is characterized by the table top made of fir wood and represents the forest after the storm has passed, overlapping trunks crashed on each other, randomly represented here by the overlapping axes that make up a decorative weave. The edge of the inclined table is the precariousness of nature, where you can see the head of the wood, in some places cracked by the force of the crash on the ground.
The base made of burnished steel.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The table is produced in different sizes and shapes, the essences of the top are made of fir, larch and other wood species such as oak, walnut, ash, beech and chestnut. Its use is as a dining table or desk, the dimensions are inspired by the golden section and the added value is the recovery and enhancement of the material deriving from the destruction of the forest after the passage of the Vaia storm. For each table produced and sold, a new tree is planted.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2019 in September 2019, everything took place in the heart of the Dolomites, with the sawing of the timber on site and with local workers, the waste product was given to the nearby district heating plant, to have a project and a certified circular economy object as well as having a functional and useful object for the home.

The pieces are cut with the help of CNC machines, with an assembly using hidden joints in the wood and glued. the surface finish is carried out with organic oil pigmented with Siena earth. the base is made up of iron tubes welded onto plates for connection to the table and resting on the floor, with inclined laser-cut holes and wire welds. the finish is made with scratchproof black oxide powder coating.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: size 165 mm. length per 100 mm. wide for a height of 75 mm. top thickness 50 mm. tubular thickness 30 mm. material from the forests of the dolomites certified by the local Natural Park and by PEFC.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The design research was based on the experience lived personally during the Vaia storm that hit the Dolomites in October 2018. From this experience and how the forest was devastated, I felt I was creating an object that represented this event, an object useful for the home and for the demolished wood, enhancing its material which, as you know when there is so much material, it devalues itself. with the production of the Ska table he was able to contribute to the restoration of the woods by placing on the market an object of value, of which a part donated to charity for the restoration of the forests of the Dolomites.
CHALLENGE: The challenge was to find and shape and represent the passage of the storm, to stop the moment, the moment. not in a work of art but in an object of use. an object dear to conviviality, that's why I chose the table. with the horizontal lines of the plane the trees felled on the ground are represented, with the vertical lines of the base the trees of the forest before the passage of the storm are represented. the thirty degree cut of the plane means the blade, the blade of the storm that has forcefully uprooted the trees.
