Interview with Alvan Suen at Wednesday 3rd of April 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AS: I wanted to design a space that can function as a restaurant as well as a working place, meanwhile to create a style that can represent the company and the menu.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AS: The main focus is to combine Japanese, industrial and futuristic elements to create a refreshing project that has its own strong identity and language.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AS: I will further develop the same design concept and make a new branch restaurant to further promote the company. Also, the award-winning headquarter design will definitely contribute to all the other restaurant concepts, making the public to be interested and look forward to the future project of The Food Story.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AS: One month

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AS: I don't want to just create a good-looking space, I would like to design something that nobody has ever seen and refreshing.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AS: No, I intend to produce the work myself.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AS: To explore new possibilities

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AS: I simply started and finished the design without references.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AS: The Food Story, the landlord and the working partners of the company.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AS: It's more like an experimental project that the project is not limited to follow any style. It's mainly about creating something new and nobody has ever seen.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AS: "Fusion" means the mixture of few things and I was creating a Japanese-like, industrial and futuristic restaurant as a concept. Also, the menu of the restaurant is also fusion.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AS: Rhinoceros

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AS: As a result of combing different elements from three different styles, it does not feel like a typical restaurant and the experience is refreshing.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AS: I worked on this design all by myself.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AS: None

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AS: No

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AS: The biggest challenge is to create a nice and sizable dining space, a well-equipped central kitchen for a catering group for different food tasting and comfortable working space as the headquarter back office, while fully satisfy all the restriction and limitation on licensing requirement in a factory in Hong Kong. Then the challenge that came after was to create a project that can represent and echo with the company's concept visually and physically.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AS: I want to see how others think about such design and if this will be appreciated and valued by people from all around the world.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AS: I tested and threw away many concepts and such an idea is totally different from those. I have learned that deadline is not an excuse to proceed and insist on something that is not right.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
