Interview with Christia Cheuk-Ying Fung at Wednesday 15th of May 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? CF: The song, "Pomp and Circumstance" is the inspiration of the design. Since, it is a classical song, the packaging had to reflect that. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? CF: I wanted to make something classy, since the brand was influenced by a classical song. Also, the design had to have some fun aspects to it, since it is a hot sauce. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? CF: Hopefully there are more flavours, so I expand the brand. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? CF: A few days. It was a tight deadline with a tight budget. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? CF: It was commissioned and I really wanted to design a hot sauce. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? CF: My client is selling it, since it's his hot sauce. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? CF: Was intrigued by the idea of creating something off of a classical song. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? CF: Art deco movement was inspirational to this piece. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? CF: Anyone who enjoys spicy stuff. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? CF: Anything classical is usually taken very seriously. Wanted to add a fun spin to it by incorporating light hearted icons. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? CF: Influenced by a classical song, 'Pomp and Circumstance'. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? CF: Pen, paper, Adobe Illustrator FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? CF: Contrast of classical aspects of design with fun icons. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? CF: Just winged it with the client. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? CF: Finalizing the design. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? CF: I went to the grocery store to look at a bunch of hot sauces, and watched "Hot Ones", a Youtube series hosted by Sean Evans. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? CF: A challenge was to make a hot sauce look classy and having design elements mimic the song the client was inspired by. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? CF: This project was one that I had a lot of fun making, so I wanted to see if the design was good enough to make the cut. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? CF: Take a breather to let the design sit a bit before you look at it again. Also, it's always good to ask someone to take a look at it and give some thoughts.
