Interview with Liudmila Shurygina at Sunday 20th of October 2019

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
LS: The main principle is to creat a pattern that will match with architecture but in the same time to be a statement by itself. The pattern which will illustrate the topic of scientific work of Michuring - fruit breeding in a bright and positive way.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
LS: My main focus was to create a pattern that would be connected with the name of the Russian biologist Michurin and concept of his work. And in the same time will be bright, energetic and also 3 dimensional in perception.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
LS: The object is built - so to have it in my portfolio, to tell about it and to create something like this again in the future.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
LS: The design faze lasted for a month, the production faze - for a year.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
LS: This design was commissioned, the topic was in the briefing.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
LS: This design is produced by another company.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
LS: I like to develop patterns for architectural objects.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
LS: I was inspired by traditional Japanese patterns.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
LS: The passengers of the metro station.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
LS: This design becomes special due global use and scale of the pattern through all the surfaces and materials of the station. It is made in red tones, which though they are very active and cover very big surfaces are organically implemented in the whole ensemble.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
LS: Name Michurinski Prospect was in assignment briefing. Metro station is named in the honour of the famous Russian biologist Michurin.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
LS: Adobe Illustrator

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
LS: The scale and amount of pattern implementation.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
LS: I have collaborated with architect Leonid Borzenkov, the head of the architectural studio in AO Metrogiprotrans.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
LS: The role of the technology is very high because the pattern was printed on different materials for interior and exterior of the station - aluminium, metal ceramic plates, glass plates. The objective was to achieve bright fresh colours on all materials in such scale.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
LS: I have made a research on architectural graphics and on patterns for inspiration.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
LS: I have faced big challenge on working on a distance with production factories. There were a lot of test made which I had to see digital and to give feedback in order to achieve a right colour. Printing on different materials gives different effect - that's why it was a big challenge.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
LS: I have been approached by A Design Award via email and found it very interesting initiative!

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
LS: I have learned to be consistent in achieving the quality on such scale and on production level as far as there is no space for mistake.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
LS: I would like to add that this design is a new solution for the Moscow metro - it is based on the objective to achieve a strong impact on the basis of practical means but not necessarily luxurious materials.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
