Interview with AART. AT Design at Wednesday 24th of April 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? RL: Inspired by traditional Chinese paintings, and the spirit of the Chinese landscape, the project aims to translate this spirit into the contemporary city and life. In order to design a sign of "spiritual Paradise". FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? RL: To connect the developing urban city with the wonderful natural landscape around. Make nature look like architecture, in the city, especially with a spiritual, cultural significance for such a historic city. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? RL: Well execute this project, and from there, develop systems Continue to think and develop systems of concepts for the purpose of connecting architecture and the natural landscape. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? RL: Around two months. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? RL: The design was commissioned by a client. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? RL: no FS: What made you design this particular type of work? RL: If architecture is design space for life, we try to think about how to offer a peaceful life for the citizens live here. The site is lying between a huge nature-park and the city, it encourage us to think about the relationship of nature and city life. Specially, in our Age, citizens live more and more in the virtual online world. And being a human, we need real contact with nature. So we try to interpreter the Chinese landscape philosophy in this project, in order to offer some new kinds of living space. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? RL: no FS: Who is the target customer for his design? RL: the thinking of the relationship between nature and human, in our digital Age FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? RL: The name of the project is Shan Shui Plaza. ShanShui means Mountain and Water in Chinese. And the philosophy of mountain and water holds an essential meaning of the relationship between human and nature. So by this name, it express our concept of connecting the city and the nature in a “poetic way”. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? RL: The most unique aspect of the design is translating the Chinese landscape philosophy and reinventing the relationship between human and nature. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? RL: the new modelling technology for design, and for construction help a lot for this project FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? RL: Not really FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? RL: It was difficult to integrate the mixed use functions into the architectural modelling, in order to express the concept of " Shan-Shui" Plaza, at the same time, make the space organization reasonable. We did many research on plan, on modelling... FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? RL: We were lucky to have received several international prize before. And each time, it was a good chance to exchange with some excellents designers all over the world. And we appreciate well the organisation of A Design Award, so submit our project on it. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? RL: It's a good chance to think about the Chinese landscape philosophy and contemporary architectural design, to think about their relationship. And how it can improve our today's city life, in this digital Age。 FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? RL: We hope to call more architects to think about fundamentals, original questions of architecture, when they design. It concerns human, the nature and the city. Architecture changes the life, and we need to think about the needs of today's life. It's important !
