Interview with Satoshi Higashijima at Thursday 31st of January 2019 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? SH: The principle of this design was to stimulate the kids' senses to encourage their development. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? SH: I hoped to design a home that was different from any other. To design something that their kids' wouldn't get to experience anywhere else in their lives. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? SH: This home will continue to inspire other designers to try new things. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? SH: 1 year FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? SH: I was inspired to design this kind of house for clients. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? SH: This is an original unique house. It is a one off. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? SH: I wanted to design something that hadn't been done before. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? SH: No, this idea developed over the year of design. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? SH: This kind of design would suit families who want to create an interesting home environment which stimulates their kids' minds and bodies. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? SH: I don't think there is any other design like this. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? SH: This name represents the space design within the house. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? SH: All drawings were sketched and then produced on Autocad. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? SH: The beehive structure. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? SH: I worked with the carpenter closely to make this design. It was something they had never tried before so it was a trusting process. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? SH: The biggest player in this design was my imagination. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? SH: My research was from watching my own kids' and seeing our environment plays such a huge role in their development. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? SH: Convincing the clients to try something that they had never seen before or they couldn't imagine. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? SH: Someone suggested I should submit this design. it is the first time I have submitted to an international competition. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? SH: It's important to be creative and try new things.
