Interview with Desert Sun Brand - Anna Lakatos at Wednesday 25th of April 2018

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AL: Desert Sun is definitely a 1970’s inspired brand. We have different themes for each collection but I think the main and common thread between each themes is this 70’s image; a combination of nostalgia and the feeling you get when you’re on a road trip with friends listening to good music in your car.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AL: Desert Sun really began with me designing a few custom pieces for my friends and family and it just turned gradually into a womenswear line. I really love vintage shopping and I am always looking for that unique piece that tells a whole story, whether it’s through its fabric, prints or even a design on its old label. So when I started designing pieces for Desert Sun, that’s what I wanted to recreate; pieces that convey a nostalgic vibe and tell a story through their details.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AL: We are working on our next collections but we are selling pieces from our previous collections too. So you can find them all online on our website and in selected stores.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AL: We create two collections each year and work on custom pieces for musician and customers. It really depends on the design. For example, with custom pieces we work closely with the person we create it for, as we think the design really should reflect the owner’s personality and should be a collaboration.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AL: We always work according to “themes”. For each collection we have a specific feeling and inspiration. We had collections inspired by the Grand Canyon, 70’s LA cults, a Corn Field collection which was inspired by horror movies set in the Midwest, 60’s Las Vegas, etc.. We do create custom pieces too, which are commissioned.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AL: It really started by me created custom pieces for friends and family. I definitely create pieces for myself and for friends, so I always think “which pieces can’t I find elsewhere?”. It is so easy to find pieces in fast fashion stores nowadays, but the problem is they always offer the same "trendy" pieces. That is why I love fashion, I always am looking for unique pieces that tell a story. I think quality is also very important. When I started designing clothes for Desert Sun, I wanted to create unique pieces that you cannot really find elsewhere and recreate that feeling you have when you find this vintage piece no one really has. Pieces that convey a nostalgic vibe and tell a story through their details.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AL: Anyone who likes to have retro pieces in their wardrobe and loves to have fun with their outfits. Or mayby just someone who wants to go on a road trip!

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
