Interview with Steven Visser at Saturday 7th of April 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? SV: Herculano was inspired by first century furniture from the Roman Era. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? SV: Herculano was intended to reflect on the rich traditions of history with its rich textures and intense coloration. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? SV: Herculano will be produced in a limited edition. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? SV: Herculano was first conceived in 2016, after two years of study of first century furniture. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? SV: Herculano was the culmination of two residencies in Italy studying Roman furniture. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? SV: I will be producing a limited edition of the Herculano table. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? SV: Waiting rooms in Corporate offices. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? SV: It is a version of the city of Herculaneum the buried city that inspired its design. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? SV: Rhino 3D was used to perfect the proportions and generate the cutting lines. PhotoShop was used to create the etching images. A Trotec Speedy 500 laser cutter was used to etch images in the table top FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? SV: The combination of laser etching and flame charred wood surface. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? SV: Many thanks to my colleagues at Purdue University for critiques and suggestions in the design of this table. Special thanks to Laura Drake, David Marchese and Rick Paul. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? SV: I wanted to share this design and its story with the world. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? SV: This project let me understand the history of furniture is long and we can learn a lot from those who came before us.
