Interview with Aijaz Hakim Architect at Tuesday 2nd of May 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AH: The main inspiration was the lifestyle of the clients and the historic legacy of their family. Although they are very dignified and calm in their approach, their lifestyle is very vibrant. They are constantly receiving guests, constantly supporting charities, constantly entering new ventures. This gave us a lot of ideas and clues to their eventual lifestyle.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AH: We wanted to achieve a harmonious residence for the clients. A house that was tranquil and opened directly onto landscape.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AH: Well this house has already gone way further than we expected. It has wone numerous awards and is still in contention for a few more as we speak. I have no further plans for this design. I will just let things flow and see where it goes.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AH: This concept was designed after two earlier concepts were not accepted by the client. It took us four months to finalise this scheme and another six months to document it.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AH: We were commissioned for this particular design.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AH: As far a s we are concerned, this design is done and over. It was an exclusive house made for our client. This will not repeat itself.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
AH: To some this may come as a surprise. But this is our first house in a 20 year career. A house that we had started from plain ground and completed avery aspect, right down to the insignia on the towels and napkins.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AH: The target customer is my young dynamic client. The one who commisssioned us for the project.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AH: The fact that we started with 11 trees on site and added more that 800 trees and 3000 bushes in the landscape. Not a single tree was cut down.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AH: The name peacock woods suggests a colorful dancing peacock in the jungle. Very few people have seen a dancing peacock, and yet many would find themselves lucky to see one. The project is based in ahmednagar, a city that is remote and a house of this stature is not really anticipated nor seen in that city. It is similar to witnessing a dancing peacock in the jungle.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AH: We had very capable consultants who helped us in realising our design. I cannot thank them enough.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AH: This house is technologically very advanced. It is energy efficient, it is power saving, it is completely green in sustainability. All active systems run on technology.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
AH: We spent three months on research before embarking on a design method. We researched the city, climate, truck routes, availibility of materials, the clients background etc.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AH: I find we are more successful in participating in International competitions, than local design competitions. Therefore the decision to participate internationall was natural.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AH: There was a constant upgrading of skills during the project. We learnt a lot of aspects that we are currently implementing in our newer projects.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
