Interview with Arnošt Vespalec at Friday 7th of April 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
AV: The primary use was and is for flying drones. So the inspiration was aerospace = new technology. And you know ... I like Star Wars ;-)

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
AV: Hard to say, but I love the nature and mechanisms hidden in it. Such mechanisms, which most people can not feel. Such mechanisms are not visible but are there.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
AV: I realy don´t know :D ... would You like to help me?

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
AV: Couple of months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
AV: How to tell it right way :D. Everythin what man created wasn´t his own work. Everythink is about your thinking, and streams of thought you know. This design pass of iteration process and has been corrected many times. The design was pushed forward by many people and many people was pushed by that forward too. I know the final part was mine, but otherwise it´s team work :).

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
AV: It´s used by Czech company Workswell s.r.o..

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
AV: Of course, friends, but it´s kind of inspiration ;)

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
AV: Everyone who need to measure temperature and like this design. It depends on customer.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
AV: That it was made by Czech people and simple and clear design is better then complex one.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
AV: WIRIS = Workswell InfraRed Imaging System ... I like it ... the right Pronunciation is by the Slav language, please don't even try to Pronounce it like English or American people.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
AV: Paper, pencil, couple of 3D-CAD softwares...

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
AV: Balance between function, design and manufacture. I like simple design, because simple is more.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
AV: Yes of course, every designer have to work with scientist, engineers that works in another branges. We can learn from each other many things that move us further.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
AV: Production technology had a big role ... what I´d be such a designer who doesn't know the manufacture technology?

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
AV: Construction, weight of product, mterials, technology of manufacturing, etc...

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
AV: I decided, when You wrote to me :)

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
AV: Man learns throughout life and I learned a lot thanks this project. But mainly it was about communicating and understanding with each other, (electrical engineers, manufacturers, supply, etc...)

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
