Interview with Mario Taepper at Wednesday 21st of March 2018 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? MT: My target was to improve the hygienic aspects in hotel bars ,lounges and other places. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? MT: My main focus was to create a container where people don't put their fingers in. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? MT: I want to sensitize people who are working in bars. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? MT: About half a year. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? MT: For the above metioned reason. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? MT: This design is produced and sold by Carl Mertens International in Solingen /Germany FS: What made you design this particular type of work? MT: The final point was that I read how many people don't wash their hands coming from toilet. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? MT: No ! FS: Who is the target customer for his design? MT: The main customers are hotels and all places where nuts and other nibblings are served. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? MT: Nuts are served in an container and are no more lying in bowls where everybody puts his fingers in. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? MT: The name VERSO is coming from the italian verb versare, it is the first present form . FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? MT: Pointline is 3D program from Switzerland . FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? MT: The form is unique and it is very handy. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? MT: For prototyping I worked together with Carl Mertens Company! FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? MT: Technology did not play a great role this time. FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design? MT: As the product was ready to use then I asked in hotels where I stayed over night I asked in bars and where ever I was, the problem of serving nuts is known. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? MT: There were no special challenges. FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition? MT: I was asked by A'Design Award to submit my design because one of your colleagues saw this work in the book of Deutscher Designer Club where it was also awarded. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? MT: Afterwoods I decided to enlarge the collection. FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions? MT: Side effect of this design is that not only the hygienic aspects are improved but also hotels are doing savings , that means that nuts have not to be thrown away.
