Interview with Geumi Lee at Saturday 21st of January 2017

FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design?
GL: Combing atheleticism and orientalism to empower the women who wear my clothes.

FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve?
GL: I wanted to create a collection that was both beautiful and powerful.

FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design?
GL: I plan to exhibit this collection further and someday develop my own line.

FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept?
GL: I designed this collection over the course of 10 months.

FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration?
GL: I was inspired to design a collection around this concept because I feel that clothing should push the boundaries and preconceptions of society, and through that empower the people who wear those clothes.

FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself?
GL: Not yet, however someday I would like to develop my own line and company.

FS: What made you design this particular type of work?
GL: My own background and heritage heavily influenced my decision to design around this concept.

FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work?
GL: The work of Hood By Air and Masion Margiela both heavily inspired the design of this collection.

FS: Who is the target customer for his design?
GL: Women who want to push the boundaries and feel powerful.

FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts?
GL: I think it makes a strong statement, but does it in a more subtle fashion than other similiar collection.

FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean?
GL: Its about women taking what they want from traditional masculine activities and traditions and claiming it as their own.

FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project?
GL: I used fitting on models, sketching and draping as my main tools.

FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design?
GL: The use of heat transfer and unique materials.

FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills?
GL: I worked by myself on this design concept, but had professors who helped me with the technical details.

FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design?
GL: Technology plays a big part in the construction and application of unique materials in this design.

FS: Is your design influenced by data or analytical research in any way? What kind of research did you conduct for making this design?
GL: I conducted only informal research observing what people wear and how they wear it.

FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept?
GL: Finding designs that were both powerful and beautiful.

FS: How did you decide to submit your design to an international design competition?
GL: My collection was well received at NY fashion week and I was encouraged by many people to submit it to international competitions.

FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work?
GL: I learned how much I love the design process, I am more interested in the process than the final show.

FS: Any other things you would like to cover that have not been covered in these questions?
GL: Thank you for your consideration for this award.

FS: Thank you for providing us with this opportunity to interview you.
