DESIGN NAME: My Own Stadium
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Collection
INSPIRATION: My collection is about a dual narrative of athleticism and orientalism. I was intrigued by the idea of combining masculine sportswear with serene traditional asian garments. Mixing these elements was challenging, but definitely interesting, since both represent two seemingly opposite feelings. I used specific sports elements especially from NFL sports gear as well as boxing gear, specifically boxing shorts. I continued to develop this concept throughout my process.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: When designing, I always think about the type of designs that I desire and the kind of woman wearing those designs. The women I portray in my designs have artistic aspects. She craves wearable but subtle conceptual design details. She has an attitude about her and likes to feel sexy but sophisticated in her clothes. I wanted to bring this woman’s mood into my collection, which is full of athletic orientalism and sexy sophistication. Most looks in my collection are made of unique fabrics.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene (which are from Tyvek and sandbag) helped to create sophisticated sculptural forms. Most fabrics I used are lightweight but hold the shapes of each looks effectively.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2016 in San Francisco and finished in September 2016, and it was exhibited in New York in September 2016.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I studied references first such as old and current athletic uniforms. After I got the idea of design details, I made samples out of real fabrics such as wrinkled cottons or fabrics from Tyvek and construction sand bags.
One of the techniques I used for my collection is Heat transfer. I made patterns of thigh pad. Also, I made quilt with heat transfer material to create matte surface.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I have always looked for creative inspiration from art works. When I traveled to Japan in 2015, I found a painting, which depicted dynamic images of People wearing the kimono. I developed my idea from that moment and I combined active sportswear with the traditional Asian garments. I had researched vintage football uniforms, boxing shorts and martial arts pants. I used those as references of my collection.
CHALLENGE: Materials I used are sensitive to heat so I couldn’t press with iron. I had to do hand pressing.
