Interview with Bryan Wong at Friday 28th of April 2017 FS: What is the main principle, idea and inspiration behind your design? BW: We spend long hours at our desks, sitting in front of our computer. Depending on work environment, you may be using a desktop or laptop. While laptop has the freedom of portability, it doesn't support healthy ergonomics for the user, not to mention the long working hours. This common problem is easily relatable to everyone. Just by angling your laptop slightly, ergonomics are improved dramatically. It reduces pain within your wrist and neck while creating better airflow for your laptop. FS: What has been your main focus in designing this work? Especially what did you want to achieve? BW: My main focus was to reduce heat without the use of any moving parts while improving ergonomics. I wanted to focus on material properties and how it can accentuate the design while keeping it simple and subtle. FS: What are your future plans for this award winning design? BW: My plan is to continue development of the design and have people use them at their office. FS: How long did it take you to design this particular concept? BW: It took me around three months to design and develop it. FS: Why did you design this particular concept? Was this design commissioned or did you decide to pursuit an inspiration? BW: I've been using my MacBook Pro for a long time and it has two major issues; heat and loud fan noise. After booting up the computer, it heats up very quickly and subsequently, the fan kicks in and creates a loud sound. Imagine in a meeting or a classroom setting, this would be a major distraction. FS: Is your design being produced or used by another company, or do you plan to sell or lease the production rights or do you intent to produce your work yourself? BW: I intend to produce and sell the work myself. I'm very passionate about this project and I think a lot of people can relate to it. FS: What made you design this particular type of work? BW: I've been using my MacBook Pro for a long time and it has two major issues; heat and loud fan noise. After booting up the computer, it heats up very quickly and subsequently, the fan kicks in and creates a loud sound. Imagine in a meeting or a classroom setting, this would be a major distraction. FS: Where there any other designs and/or designers that helped the influence the design of your work? BW: No, I worked alone on this project. FS: Who is the target customer for his design? BW: My target customer is a Pro-sumer, someone who uses their MacBook Pro for work at an office for long periods. FS: What sets this design apart from other similar or resembling concepts? BW: Existing products in the market focus on portability rather than actual cooling for a laptop. They are made from plastic and uses fans to attempt to cool off the laptop, and it requires a USB connection to draw power from. Apart from inefficient cooling, they create extra noise and occupies a USB connection port. My design utilizes aluminum's amazing material attributes, the laptop stand acts as a passive heatsink and dissipates heat into the air without the use of fans or power while remaining silent. FS: How did you come up with the name for this design? What does it mean? BW: Instead of giving this design a special name, I named it by what it literally is — a laptop stand that acts as a heatsink and is made from aluminum. FS: Which design tools did you use when you were working on this project? BW: I used SolidWorks to model the form and used Autodesk Fusion 360's simulation tool to run and validate different tests. FS: What is the most unique aspect of your design? BW: The unique aspect of my design is the use of material to create efficient cooling without the use of fans or power while remaining silent. The beauty is simply place your laptop on the laptop stand and it'll do the rest for you, automatically and instantly. FS: Who did you collaborate with for this design? Did you work with people with technical / specialized skills? BW: I worked alone for this project. FS: What is the role of technology in this particular design? BW: I've used different software to model the form and run different simulations to validate my concept. By using software simulations, I was able to validate my design without producing extra prototypes and reducing waste. FS: What are some of the challenges you faced during the design/realization of your concept? BW: One of the biggest challenges I've faced was to validate the cooling mechanism and efficiency without any moving parts or interactions from the user. Most of the products today are smart and require some form of internet connection or charging. Instead, I went the opposite direction to solve this issue. FS: What did you learn or how did you improve yourself during the designing of this work? BW: Throughout this project, I've gained extra knowledge on aluminum and it never ceases to surprise me.
